Hallo zusammen,

hier noch einige interessante Ergänzungen zum Thema von James Espey aus DMCHelp.com:

I think a more accurate number for 1981 is 6700 cars - VIN 00500 to VIN 7199 = 6700 cars.

I think the 9,200 number comes primarily from Knut Grimsrud's DeLorean Production Chronology where he used some statistical math to extrapolate the numbers of cars built.

With the verification that large numbers of VIN's were skipped in the 10XXX, 11XXX, 12XXX, 15XXX, 16XXX and possibly 17XXX ranges, I think all that math gets thrown out the window.

82's and 83's are really what screws everything up.

I think the 1,126 number you mentioned for 1982's comes from the inertia switch recall service bulletin dated July 16, 1982 which refers to 1982 model year vehicles as 10001-11127 (1126 cars).

We now know that MANY 10XXX and 11XXX vehicles were re-VIN'd by Consolidated as 15XXX and 16XXX VIN's prior to sale in the states. Look at the VIN Chronology for 1982 models (page 51) of:

http://www.dmcnews.com/faq/img/news/n_vinlst.pdf

Under comments, where it says "Invoice Detail 11/01/82, Ref No. 0024/1", that refers to an invoice of cars shipped from DMCL (the factory) to DMCA (in the states). This shipment was the last one shipped from DMCL while under JZD's control. Any remaining completed cars sat either at the factory or at the docks until Consolidated took control sometime in late 1982 or 1983.

Rather than sell them as 1982 VIN cars, these completed 10XXX and 11XXX cars were re-VIN'd as 1983 models by adding 5000 to the VIN and putting on new VIN plates. An example of this is probably your own car, Dan. VIN 16192, I'll bet, was originally VIN 11192. Take off the headliners and see what is written in magic marker, probably V11192. Your dash mounted VIN plate is probably glued on, and not pop-riveted, like the 1981 models. VIN 11192 then does not exist.

Incidentally, the 17XXX VIN's (widely believed to be Canada-spec cars) are done this same way. Removing the headliners on a 17XXX cars reveals a 12XXX number. VIN plates are also glued, vs pop-riveted.

This means that you can take all of the 15XXX and 16XXX numbers and remove them from possible 10XXX and 11XXX VINs.

Shannon Birdwell and I are putting together as much of this as we can to try and get some more accurate numbers for the 82's and 83's. I'll post more as we get further along.

James
